Philadelphia Region's Chapter of the ACM SIGCHI

2007 PhillyCHI Design Slam 1

What's a design slam?
During the meeting, participants will be teamed and introduced to a full-fledged hypothetical project, including appropriate client-side deliverables. They'll then have an opportunity to interview key players on the client's team. The session will conclude with proposal presentations from each of the groups to the "clients" and the assembled audience.

Then the "clients" team will choose a winner. Members of the winning team will receive a plethora of praise from your peers and perhaps an award.

What's in it for me?
This is a chance for interested IAs, designers and usability practitioners to get their hands dirty working side by side with colleagues as they tackle tough business problems in a fun and sometimes crazy environment. Knowledge transfer, technique sharing, and a social atmosphere makes this session stand out from the garden-variety "lecture-and-Powerpoint" presentation.

Those that want to participate need to be at the meeting by 6:15pm at the latest. The client team will be introducing the design challenge promptly at 6:25.

If you do not want to participate due to not being able to get to the meeting on-time or a severe case of social phobia, fear not! We would like to have an audience during this session to play the role of users, and help choose the winning team.

Sign up now!
If you would like to participate, please RSVP now to phillychi@gmail.com. Why now? We may need to cap attendance.

Graphic Noise

Art at 1,000 dB

Graphic Design & Rock 'n' Roll! Elvis Costello, Bright Eyes, Duran Duran, Death Cab for Cutie, Blondie, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Cure, and Iron & Wine are just some of the musical acts included in Graphic Noise: Art at 1,000 dB a stupendous exhibition of contemporary concert posters sponsored by the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) and produced in cooperation with Drexel University's Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, Graphic Design Program and the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery.

Following its successful run at MODA with unprecedented attendance, Graphic Noise makes it's only other east coast stop in Philadelphia. This unique collection highlighting the work of variety of artists ranging from independent screen printers, illustrators and graphic designers to boutique art studios and graphic design houses captures the bold imagination and passion for music that defines the new generation of poster artists.

These handmade posters commissioned by local venues to promote performances were originally plastered in coffee houses, record stores and shop windows. The array of techniques and styles represented is vast. Posters exhibited include everything from rough hand-drawn graphics, screen printings, letterpress productions, to posters so finely rendered they appear to be film stills. The exhibit includes leaders in the field of poster design Jesse LeDoux, Jeff Kleinsmith, Tara McPherson, Mark McDevitt, and Robert Lee. Local artists are represented as well including Eleanor Grosch from Pushmepullyou Design, Tim Gough, Laura Lopez, James Heimer and Stick Up Printing.

AIGA Design Expedition to China

13 days to Shanghai, Beijing Guangzhou
April 29 - May 12, 2006

Design is sizzling hot and served up fast in China today. As markets rapidly expand and global competition heats up, the importance of design and communication has emerged as a truly vital, important key to success. Especially true in a growing China where thousands of products are designed and produced each day and hundreds of schools graduate 10,000 designers each year. China is in the exciting process of re-invigorating and re-interpreting the global field of design.

How will it incorporate and build upon its own ancient cultural and design traditions? What can an American designer learn from our Chinese counterparts in this global era of design possibilities? The understanding of other cultures is a prerequisite for effective communication and design. Some of the most vital moments of cultural exchange come when engaging in a true dialogue with one's peers.

With this in mind, the AIGA Center for Cross-Cultural Design is sponsoring a 13-day Design Expedition to China to visit three of China's most dynamic cities: Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. This in-depth tour will lead a select group of American designers to engage their Chinese counterparts--to experience first hand how a Chinese designer lives and works, to discover the sources of his/her inspiration, and to learn how he communicates in this rapidly changing global environment.

In addition to discovering some of China's greatest architecture, art and cultural riches, our itinerary will take us to the leading design programs universities as well as into the studios of some of China's top designers. Our tour will be lead by Robert Linsky, a graphic and information designer with over 30 years of experience. In the 1990's under the auspices of the International Society of Graphic Designers (ISGD), Robert led small groups of designers to China, Russia and Eastern Europe. His experience in leading these trips and his contacts in those areas created the most interesting and exciting trips of their time.

Space is limited to the 25 people on a first-come, first-served basis. For a registration form or more information, please contact: Robert Linsky, 617-646-4129 or linskyrobert@hotmail.com

Pricing:
From a west coast city: $3,650.00
From any other US city: $3,900.00 (and we need the name of the city)
The above is based on double occupancy, for single supplement, add $695.00

Inequality Matters

Inequality Matters poster submission

Design a poster! - AIGA National Initiative
AIGA members can design their own posters to add to the Inequality Matters gallery. The poster series illustrates how much disparity there is in the world and the intent is to provoke awareness of the issue of inequality, using data from the UN Human Development Report 2005 (http://hdr.undp.org/reports/global/2005/). Rich countries, for example, account for more than 50 percent of the world's annual income, but less than 20 percent of the population.

The poster deadline is March 15, 2006.
