trigger: Projects Initiated by Graphic Designers
Trigger considers what graphic designers create from own interests and inspirations when they work without clients -- when the designer is the trigger. These projects demonstrate a range of possible modes for graphic designers: personal, political, artistic, entrepreneurial, curatorial and hypothetical. Within this wide divergence of self-initiated work, there are recurring concerns with language, symbols, information and subject matter that tends to be more public than private. 'In the service of commerce' describes how graphic design most often operates, but doesn't define what it is. By looking at what graphic designers develop on their own steam, trigger reveals something about the essential nature of design. The exhibit celebrates this uncommissioned work, broadening the rubric of design to include it.
Featuring work by: Elizabeth Beer / Peter Buchanan-Smith / Class Action / Stephen Doyle / John Emerson / Allan Espiritu / Carin Goldberg / Stuart Henley / Illegal Art / Brian Janusiak / Dan Michaelson / Josh On / David Reinfurt / Stefan Sagmeister / Paul Sahre / Paula Scher / Matthew McGuinness / Morgan Sheasby / Stuart Smith / Thomas Starr / Jon Sueda / Weikert Design / Worldstudio / Edvin Yegir
Curated by Jacqueline Thaw
Jacqueline Thaw is a graphic designer in New York City. She is an Assistant Professor at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, and a member of Class Action, a collective that creates design for social change.

Penn Humanities Forums: Word & Image
When the verbal and the visual collide, new meanings spring into being. Check out this year's program on Word & Image!
http://humanities.sas.upenn.edu/calendar.shtml
The Penn Humanities Forum was launched with a "Celebration of Philadelphia Writers," a spring weekend in 1999 in which sixty local novelists, poets, and scholars assembled in historic and cultural venues throughout the city. Over 2000 Philadelphians attended the readings, walking tours, performances, and lectures, and thousands across the country saw these re-broadcast on C-Span. The Celebration epitomizes the Forum's mission: to use humanistic knowledge and expertise to promote an ongoing cultural conversation involving the range of university disciplines and the general public.

AIGA Local and National Hurricane Relief Effort
In response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, AIGA Philadelphia will be organizing a collection at the Edward Tufte lecture, Beautiful Evidence on Friday, September 23. All donations will be sent to the American Red Cross.
Currently, AIGA National is assessing members' needs in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. AIGA National's first priority will be to help members communicate with each other; a simple form has been posted at www.aiga.org/reliefeffort to collect information from those in need of assistance and from those who can offer it. National is focusing on the power and fellowship of the design community to carry it's members through this time.
If you have space, jobs, housing, or even schooling (colleges and universities in Minneapolis and Chicago are offering to enroll student victims), please visit the national site. Some AIGA members are also offering to donate design services to businesses affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Two sessions will be added to the AIGA Design Conference program: one on how to be most effective in aiding relief in the Gulf Coast area and a second on what this dreadful experience suggests in terms of the power of design to aid emergency procedures and evacuation. Ideas on how the design community can help in future disaster relief efforts can be forwarded to relief@aiga.org.
For more information about the American Red Cross, visit www.redcross.org. Or visit the local American Red Cross headquarters at www.redcross-philly.org and volunteer to help.
