Died Young, Stayed Pretty

Died Young, Stayed Pretty

Film Screening followed by a conversation with filmmaker Eileen Yaghoobian

Picking up where punk left off, Died Young, Stayed Pretty reveals a new breed of counter-culturists; artists that set out to destroy the mainstream through their controversial and intensely visceral design work. Under the guise of advertising for rock shows, these unheralded masters of the silkscreen and Xerox machine carry on public discourses that range from hot button political issues to lewd inside jokes. This feature film is the first of its kind to take a candid look at the renaissance of North America's underground indie-rock poster movement.

The film screening is produced in conjunction with NET Nights at Moore which is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

About  |  Hans Allemann

[–] Click HERE for less details

Hans-Ulrich Allemann holds a Swiss National Diploma (MFA equivalent) from the School of Design, Basel, Switzerland. In 1965 he began his professional career in Zurich, Switzerland, working for an advertising agency.

In 1967-1969 he came to the United States under the cultural exchange program between the U.S. and Europe to teach at The Kansas City Art Institute. Together with the department chairman Rob Roy Kelly, and his faculty colleagues, Hans helped in the planning and implementation of a new educational program for graphic design.

In 1969 Hans returned to his home country to work for a design studio and later an advertising agency in Zürich. Awards and publications from that period include: Top Symbols and Trademarks of the World; Typomundus; Graphis; French Publicité and Modern Publicity.

In December of 1973, Hans accepted a full-time faculty position in the graphic design department at the Philadelphia College of Art (now The University of the Arts). Together with Kenneth Hiebert, founder and long time chairman of the program, and his faculty colleagues, he helped shape the Department’s internationally recognized design program. Hans chaired the department for a three-year period. Throughout the 1970s he also conducted a successful freelance design consultancy.

During a one year sabbatical in 1983, together with Jan C. Almquist and Dana Jones, he formed the design partnership of Allemann Almquist & Jones. Hans’ and the firm’s work has been recognized by leading professional organizations and publications worldwide. His and Jan Almquist’s poster work is in private collections, museum collections and libraries in the U.S. and abroad. Other honors include Hans’ induction as a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) in 1998.

Hans is a founding member of the AIGA/Philadelphia chapter. He was named AIGA Fellow in 2000 for his active involvement in the chapter’s development and for his influence and contribution as a professional designer and educator.

Until this year, Hans has held an adjunct professorship in Graphic Design at The University of the Arts. His course programs have been featured in educational publications in the U.S. and Europe. Throughout his career Hans has lectured at institutions here and abroad. In 2005, he was the recipient of The Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, an honor that was bestowed on him by The University of the Arts.

After a professional career, spanning over four decades and two continents, Hans is now ready for a new beginning, retirement in Switzerland, his homeland.

About  |  Joel Katz

[–] Click HERE for less details

Joel Katz—designer, photographer, and teacher—is widely known for his information design and wayfinding systems. Major wayfinding projects include: Center City Philadelphia; Central City Portland, Oregon; Downtown Omaha, Nebraska; and schematic design for the MIT Master Plan, which won an Honor Award from the SEGD. An important current signing project is a comprehensive transit portals signing program for Center City Philadelphia. Cursed with a hopeless sense of direction, his maps and signs are driven by an urge for survival as well as professional interest and passion.

Katz holds three degrees from Yale: BA Scholar of the House with Exceptional Distinction; and BFA and MFA in graphic design. During his Scholar of the House project, a book of photographs and writing on Mississippi in 1964, he studied with Herbert Matter and Walker Evans.

He moved to Philadelphia in 1972 to work for Richard Saul Wurman. Striking out on his own in 1975, he and Alina Wheeler formed Katz Wheeler Design in 1980. Between 1993 and 1995 he was a partner with industrial designer Peter Bressler in Paradigm:Design. He formed Joel Katz Design Associates in 1995.

In 2002, Katz won the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, where he spent 11 months working on design and photography projects. These can be seen on his websites: www.joelkatzdesign.com; and www.joelkatzphotography.com. Also in 2002 he was named the AIGA Philadelphia Fellow. He is a founding member of AIGA/Philadelphia and was the chapter's first president.

He has taught at Yale, the Rhode Island School of Design, Philadelphia University, and Moore College of Art & Design. Currently, he teaches “Visualizing Information" and critiques degree projects in graphic design at The University of the Arts; in that capacity, he has worked with Hans Allemann's section for more than 10 years. His most recent lectures on information design were at the University of Louisville.

Katz's photography has been exhibited and published in both the U.S. and abroad, and his design work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York, and the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and Kyoto. He was made an honorary life member of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association in 1980 for his work visualizing the function of infants' kidneys.
