Designing Obama's brand

Sol Sender from Sender LLC.

Sol Sender and his team at Sender LLC have turned the letter "O" in Barack Obama's name into an iconic logo like the swoosh from the Nike. The innovative approach toward branding the Obama campaign has helped set it apart from what has come before. Obama's brand has sparked many conversations about the importance of design in political campaigns. When Michael Bierut from Pentagram was asked where Obama's brand stands against the best commercial brand design, he answered "I think it's just as good or better." Sol Sender will share his insight and his experience of working on one of the most recognized political brands. Register for this event ahead of time since it'll fill up fast.

Greenstock Series

Event 3: GLOBAL

AIGA Philadelphia's Spring Lecture series, Greenstock, will be wrapping up this year on Earth Day,Tuesday, April 22, with a lecture by Dr. Paul Polak.

Psychiatrist, entrepreneur and philanthropist Paul Polak is the founder and president of International Development Enterprises (IDE), a nonprofit that is harnessing the power of the market to alleviate poverty. After a trip to Somalia, Polak became interested in working with the rural poor. He learned about their challenges by employing the same tactics he pioneered as a psychiatrist — interviewing them in their environment to understand their specific struggles firsthand. By becoming intimate with the day-to-day needs of the poor and treating them as customers, entrepreneurs and producers, IDE has developed affordable technologies that have transformed the lives of poor farmers.

In Spring 2007, the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York showcased Design for the Other 90% — an exhibition inspired by Paul — that features affordable and socially responsible objects, including several IDE water irrigation and storage tools. Paul poses the same challenge in Out of Poverty that the exhibition addresses: 90 percent of the world's designers focus on solutions for the richest 10 percent of the world's customers rather than the other 90 percent who need it most.

Currently, Paul is spearheading D-Rev: Design for the Other 90% with the intent of igniting a design revolution. D-Rev will help multinational corporations develop affordable products for dollar-a-day customers, continuing Paul's mission — bringing prosperity to the world's poor.

Philadelphia Inquirer Article  |  2008-03-30

Copies of Out of Poverty, Polak's impassioned and iconoclastic new book, will be available for purchase at the event for $27.95.

Thanks to Adobe for donating a copy of CS3 Design Premium (valued at $1799) to be raffled at the end of the lecture

Urban Forest Project

An Exhibition

In the fall of 2006, The Urban Forest Project, an unprecedented outdoor exhibition, took root in New York City. One hundred eighty- five of some of the world's most celebrated designers and artists employed the idea, or form, of the tree to make a powerful visual statement on banners that were displayed throughout Times Square.

The tree is a metaphor for sustainability, and in that spirit the banners from the exhibition were recycled into totebags designed exclusively for the project by Jack Spade. Profits from the sale of the totebags went to Worldstudio AIGA Scholarships and the AIGA/NY Mentoring Program to sustain the next generation of design talent. http://www.urbanforestproject.org

Greenstock Series

Event 1: LOCAL

AIGA Philadelphia’s Spring Lecture series, Greenstock, is a succession of programs focusing on sustainability in design. Our first event, called “Local,” is a roundtable discussion by members of Philadelphia’s design community who are currently working in green and sustainable design.

Roundtable Participants will include:
Bart Houlahan  |  B Corporation
Bart is the co-founder of B Lab, and former CFO, COO and President of AND 1. B Corporations? are a new type of corporation that are purpose-driven and create benefit for all stakeholders, not just shareholders. B Corporations? meet comprehensive and transparant social and environmental performance standards.

Angelo Anastasio  |  Greenable
Greenable is Philadelphia's premier resource for interior and exterior green building products and services for residential & commercial projects. Greenable was founded on a single principle: Do good by every living thing. This is a broad concept. But the negative impact of traditional building and short-sighted planning is especially broad on both our environment and our future.

Andrew Dahlgren  |  Green Village Philadelphia
Andrew Dahlgren’s recent Master’s of Industrial Design Thesis at the University of the Arts was on the future of sustainable manufacturing and about how local action will be the key component if designers are to make a difference.

Jameson Detweiler  |  Drexel Smart House
The Drexel Smart House is a student-led, multidisciplinary project that will provide an outstanding example for what the urban home of the future should look like and will show how quality of life can improve through smart design and technology: simplifying daily life, decreasing a person's environmental impact, and providing a healthier home.

Alex Peltz  |  Design for Social Impact
