Lecture  |  FLAT

Interactive structures allow us to engage in the world. With them we play, dine, screw, vote, consume. Without them our actions are unintelligible, mad... insane. Through a wide-ranging discussion of life, the internet, and over 10 years of work, Doug Lloyd will explore the makings of a well-designed interactive experience.

Doug Lloyd is a partner at Flat Inc. (www.flat.com), a multi-disciplinary design firm founded in 1996 and located in NYC. Flat works with a varied clientele to solve identity, interactive, editorial and environmental design challenges. The practice is predicated on the belief that good design facilitates the smooth flow of information and enlivens all forms of social discourse.

CHAT+ROOM - Too Many Designers

OCTOBER CHAT+ROOM:

Too Many Designers: Freedom vs. Responsibility in Education

The number of graphic design programs in this country is steadily increasing. This results in a larger crop of new graduates entering an already competitive field each year. Are there too many graphic designers out there, and do students have realistic expectations for life after graduation? What responsibility do educational institutions hold to students after they have earned their degree? Is it more important for institutions of higher education to protect a students wishes to pursue a career of choice or to protect their marketability?

Please join us to discuss these topics and more with moderators David Copestakes (The Pennsylvania State University) and Maribeth Kradel-Weitzel (Philadelphia University).

He will also discuss his analysis (which appeared in the final report of the Columbia Accident Investigation Review Board) of the Boeing/NASA PowerPoint slides created after the Columbia was damaged but still aloft.

WHO IS LAURIE ROSENWALD, ANYWAY?

WHAT IS SHE GOING TO TALK ABOUT?
Well, mostly, she's going to talk about YOU. She saw what you did. Just kidding. Maybe she'll tell you that her first job was coloring in the black squares of The New York Times crossword puzzle. After that she will probably mention the time David Bowie bought her a cheeseburger. Maybe she'll tell you about getting kidnapped from a train going from Budapest to Paris by these Austrian art directors in Armani suits who forced her off the train in Salzburg where they were having this Mozart festival and all these Japanese tourists were there and then they forced her to design a new logo for a company that made hang gliding equipment in Hong Kong and then they asked her what it was really like to be a New York Jew. Was it like the Woody Allen movies? It wasn't.
